Indian Brick Standard Size and Dimension

If bricks are heavy then it is very tough to burn them properly. They become very tough to place with a single hand. On the other hand, if bricks are small, more mortar quantity is required. Hence, a standard dimension determines for various brickworks.

Brick Size

The actual Size of Brick/Nominal Size of a Brick:

The brick dimension without mortar thickness is the actual size of modular brick. That is 190mm? 90mm? 90mm.

Nominal size is the actual size plus the mortar joint width. We are taking mortar thickness 10mm, so nominal size of modular brick is 190mm? 90mm? 90mm. Most bricks manufacture that the nominal sizes fit into a grid of 4 inches, which comply with the modules of other building materials such as doors, windows, and wood components.

Standard & Nominal Brick Size in India

There are two sizes of brick used in India standard brick and nominal brick size. BIS recommendation of the Standard brick size is 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm. The brick dimension with mortar thickness becomes 200 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm, which is also known as the nominal size of the modular brick.

Modular brick means brick along with cement mortar joints, standard modular brick size is 200mm ?100mm ?100 mm, the Volume of one Standard modular brick is 0.2m?0.1m?0.1m =0.002m3. That means the Volume is 0.002m3 for one Standard modular brick.

Conventional/Traditional Brick Size

Conventional size of brick specification determined as Length ? breadth ? height. The length is 20-25 cm, width varies is 10-13 cm, thickness is 5-7.5 cm. Traditional/ conventional brick nominal size is 23 cm x 11.4 cm x 7.6 cm.

Conventional/Traditional Size of Brick in Inches

conventional size of brick specification (Length ? breadth ? height), the length varies from 8? -10? width varies from 4? to 5? and thickness varies from 2-3?. The universally adopted nominal size conventional/ traditional brick is 9?x4 ? ?x3? approximately.

Conventional/ traditional size of brick in mm.

Conventional/Traditional Size of Brick in mm

Conventional size of brick specification (Length ? breadth ? height), the length varies from 200 to 250 mm, width varies 100 to 130 mm, thickness varies from 50- 75 mm. 230 mm x 114 mm x 76 mm is the nominal size of conventional or traditional brick.

The Brick Standard Size of India is two types

1. Modular Brick
2. Non-modular Brick.

The Standard modular size of building brick specification (length ? breadth ? height) used in India shall be 190mm ? 90mm ? 90mm and 190mm ? 90mm ? 40mm.Non-modular size of bricks is 230mm ? 110mm ? 70mm & 230mm ? 110mm ? 30mm.

Brick shall be hand molded or machine molded and shall make from suitable soil. It will free from cracks, flaws-dust, and nodules of free lime.

The Standard brick size is hand molded or machine molded should have length 190mm, breadth 90mm and depth 90 mm.

Standard brick size are following:

1) modular brick size (l ? b ? h) ? 19cm ? 9cm ? 9cm and 19cm ? 9cm ? 4cm

2) Non?modular brick size is 23cm ? 11cm ? 7cm & 23cm ? 11cm ? 3cm.

The brick Standard size in mm are following:- 1) modular brick size (l ? b ? h) ? 190mm ? 90mm ? 90mm and 190mm ? 90mm ? 40mm and 2) non ? modular size of bricks like 230mm ? 110mm ? 70mm & 230mm ? 110mm ? 30mm may also be used.

The brick standard size in inches is following:

1) Modular brick size (l ? b ? h) ? 7.5? ? 3.5? ? 3.5? and 7.5? ? 3.5? ? 1.5?
2) Non ? modular brick size is 9? ? 4.3? ? 2.75? & 9? ? 4.3? ? 1.18?.

The modular brick standard size is following:

1) 190mm ? 90mm ? 90mm. 90mm height brick provided with 10mm to 20mm.
2) 190mm ? 90mm ? 40mm

The brick Nominal size ? We add a brick joint or cement mortar thickness in the brick-actual size. That is the brick-nominal size. Nominal size of brick = Actual size of brick + thickness of cement mortar, the actual size of modular brick is 190mm ? 90mm ? 90mm, when we add 10mm thickness in which dimension we get the nominal size of brick in mm as 200mm ? 100mm ? 100mm, in cm as 20cm ? 10cm ? 10cm and in inches as 9? ? 4? ? 4?.

The common burnt clay bricks shall be judged on the average compressive strength basis into their different designation of class like 35, 30, 25, 20, 17.5, 15, 12.5, 10, 7.5, 5 and 3.5 with compressive strength are 35 N/mm2, 30 N/mm2, 25 N/mm2, 20 N/mm2, 17.5 N/mm2, 15 N/mm2, 12.5 N/mm2, 10 N/mm2, 7.5 N/mm2, 5 N/mm2 and 3.5 N/mm2 respectively.

Standard Brick Size and Weight

The weight of the standard size of brick is kept between 3- 3.5 kg in India, depending upon the class of brick, so that a mason can lift it with one hand and work a full day. The breadth has to range between 4 to 5 inches. Mason can hold the brick using his fingers and thumb.

Popular size of Brick used in India

  • Modular Brick: nominal size 20 x 10 x 10 cm is common in MP and only in some other places where machine-made bricks are available.
  • English size: The English size of brick is 23 x 11.5 x 7.5 cm or 9? x 4.5? x 3?. It is the most popular size available in most parts of India.
  • Bengal size: The Bengal size of brick is 25 x 12.5 x 7.5 cm size or 10? x 5? x 3? is popular in West Bengal and some parts adjoining West Bengal and North East.

The weight of the brick should not be more than 3 Kg so that a mason can lift it with one hand and work a full day. The breadth has to range between 4 to 5 inches. Mason can hold the brick using his fingers and thumb.

The ratios of length: breadth: Thickness chooses that the bricks laid in masonry make a pattern (or Bond) so that vertical joints do not come one above the other in alternate courses.
