Some useful guidelines to find out the cutting length of circular stirrup

In this construction video tutorial, one can get detail information on how to determine the cutting length of any circular stirrup.

The calculation is made on the basis of the following dimensions :-

Diameter of column = 500 mm
Diameter of the bar = 8 mm
Clear cover = 40 mm
Radius of the column = 250 mm
Length of the hook = 10d or 75 mm (here d means diameter of stirrup)

Cutting length of circular stirrup is determined with the following formula :-

Circumference + Hook ? Bends

Suppose, you have to find out the length of a circle. Now, you start from point A and cover the entire circle and again reach to point A. This distance or length of the circle is known circumference and it is represented as 2pr.

= 2pr + (2x10 x d) ? (2 x 2 x d)[as there are two hooks and two bends]
Here, the value of p = 3.14, d = 8mm and the value of r is unknown.

To find out the value of r, the following formula is used :-

r = Column radius ? clear cover ? d/2
= 250 ? 40 ? 4(as diameter = 500 mm, so radius is 500/2 = 250 mm)
= 206 mm

After putting all the values, we get the following :-

2pr + 2(10 x d) ? (2 x 2 x d)
= (2 x 3.14 x 206) + (2x10x8) ? (2x2x8)
= 1293.68 + 160 ? 32
= 1453.68 ? 32 = 1421.68 mm

To convert the value to meter, divide it with 1000.
So, we get 1.42 m as cutting length of circular stirrup.
