A sieve analysis alias gradation test refers to a method that is mostly utilized in civil engineering sectors to evaluate the particle size distribution (also known as gradation) concerning the coarse and fine aggregates.

The size distribution is very vital for the performance of the material. A sieve analysis is executed on different types of non-organic or organic granular materials along with sands, crushed rock, clays, granite, feldspars, coal, soil, extensive manufactured powders, grain and seeds, down to a least size subject to the proper method.

Sieve analysis is performed by sieving the aggregates with reference to IS: 2386 (Part I) ? 1963. So, various sieves are used as per standard set by the IS code and then aggregates are transmitted through them and thus different sized particles left over different sieves are obtained.

The average size of the particles in the coarse aggregate is determined by the fineness modulus of coarse aggregates through an index number. The process of calculation is done by sieve analysis with standard sieves.

Fineness modulus belongs to the number to specify the average size of particle while counting them from lower order sieve size to higher order sieve. Therefore, while measuring coarse aggregate, all sizes of sieves are necessary.
